The State of Sonora is located in the northwest of the Mexico. It borders with the United States to the north, Sinaloa state to the south, Chihuahua state to the east and the Sea of Cortes to the west. Sonora is the second largest state in land-mass in Mexico with 184.934 square kilometers.
Thanks to its privileged location, Sonora is a unique and safe tourist destination, awaiting inquisitive visitors to discover its legendary cities, beautiful beaches and spectacular views of landscapes where ocean meets desert and mountain.
The diversity of ecosystems found in Sonora makes possible a great variety of recreational including fishing, mountain biking, scuba diving, ecotourism, camping, and hunting. The visitor will also find a great number of animal species in Sonora, both in land and in the ocean.
In addition to its natural richness, Sonora offers a great variety of regional food that manages to satisfy even the most demanding of palates; there are many ethnic groups settled in the state who to this day manifest their traditions through harmonic dance and other shows of culture.
The state offers its visitors all of the amenities available in the world's finest destinations. It has first class hotels, tourist assistance and a world-class communications and transportation system.

The two main museums in Hermosillo are the Regional Museum with ethnological exhibits and the Museo de Sonora, originally a penitentiary facility, which now houses historical objects. Cathedral of La Asuncion and the two picturesque chapels of Del Carmen and Espiritu Santo are important ecclesiastical buildings. The Municipal Palace and Government Palace in Alamos are also well worth visiting.
Bahia Kino is a beautiful bay with white sand beaches where you can try aquatic sports such as diving and sailing. The fishing town of Puerto Peñasco is a lovely seaside resort. The beaches of El Creston and San Carlos are popular tourist spots. The adventurous could try rock climbing at La Pintada to find interesting rock-paintings. The Gran Desierto del Pinacate Natural Park, an extinct volcanic zone, is characterised for its amazing landscape. Near Guaymas is El Sahuaral,the Enchanted Forest, a shelter for wild fauna.
In the town of Kino, the locals offer handicrafts for sale. Do not miss the Vendimia Feast, held in Hermosillo with parades and exhibitions. For a feel of the local culture, attend the San Juan Festival in Ciudad Obregon. The Copper Fair is celebrated in Cananea in June.
