
Loreto is one of the five tourists cities in the state of Baja California Sur Mexico. The city used to be the capital of the state until the capital was moved to la Paz, near the Sea of Cortez. Behind Loreto lies the great Giganta mountains.

Nuestra Señora de Loreto in the center of the town. Something you really must visit is Sierra de San Francisco, with its spectacular aboriginal cave paintings dating back nearly 1,500 years. In San Francisco you can see 300 sites showing this caves of mostly human figures.
Cuevas Pintas in Sierra Giganta is another interesting place to visit, located at 15km west of Loreto off the state highway. At this caves you can see abstract figures painted in red, yellow, black d white; the paintings depict the scenes of the Pre-Hispanic people who inhabitated the Baja California Peninsula region.

In Cueva la Pintada you will also see some of this drawings of human figures in diverse positions but also black and ocher drawings including animals figures such as birds and reptiles.
