
The area of Forest Protection and Wildlife Refuge Cascadas de Agua Azul, was established by presidential decree of 26 April 1980. This territory extends over 2.580 hectares. The indigo blue water, green vegetation, the constant breeze and the sound of incessant water help make this place, located 159 km northeast of the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas, one of the most spectacular and Mexico unforgettable. Blue Water River drops its limestone bed in steps forming a series of impressive waterfalls that create natural pools contained by levees limestone called Rimstone in geological terms. At the entrance of the site are craft shops, small food stalls and local guides who take visitors to other waterfalls bolder even more dramatic, as the stairs continue downstream until the river plunges Tulija River, forming one of the most beautiful sheets of water. The Tulija, a tributary of Grijalva, is one of the major rivers in northern Chiapas. His tenure is marked by its intense turquoise color and the presence of delicious natural pools and waterfalls picturesque. The intricate hydrological network of Chiapas combined with a highly rugged topography gives the state the privilege of having more waterfalls than any other. Although the Agua Azul is the most popular and accessible, the traveller aquatic sensitive to beauty, you'll find wonderful water scenery throughout the state territory.

Flora
Latitudinal variations, determine the existence of five major types of vegetation in the area:
Tropical evergreen forest.
Tropical semi-deciduous forest.
Oak forest.
Semi-aquatic vegetation. Located on the banks of rivers and water bodies, is characterized by the sapote water and some legumes as: Lonchocarpus.
Fauna The animals found there are: Jaguar and the tapir and birds like the scarlet macaw (, the toucan beak canoe, mouse opossum, numerous species bat as toltecus Artibeus, Carollia subrufa, Myotis elegans. There are also home to birds that come from tropical forests as are the wild troglodyte and piquiverde toucan.
Getting There
To reach the waterfalls of Agua Azul can do down the road from Palenque, which is about 69 kilometres, or San Cristobal de las Casas, which is 200 miles.
If you arrive at Tuxtla Gutierrez, the Chiapas state capital, take the highway to San Cristobal de las Casas and then go on their way to Palenque before coming to this city, find the detour that will take you to this wonderful natural attraction. The travel time is 5 hours and thirty minutes or so.
