Before the end of the third quarter, Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA) and the government of Chiapas will begin building a new airport at Palenque, which will replace the airfield, which lies abandoned in 2008 carried only a 2 mil 11 passengers. The new terminal can receive Boeing 767 and Airbus 330.
Gilberto Lopez Meyer, CEO of ASA, revealed that the initial 100 million pesos of investment, the agency will provide another 100 already approved in the current budget, while the state government already has the land where the new terminal will be built air.
In fact, he said, "we begin this project. Are nearing completion of studies of soil mechanics, and other ecological impacts. We believe that we will begin work this year. It will have a period of two years, two years and a half, and could be ready in the second half of 2011.
There has been a long talk with the state government and together, just like in Tuxtla Gutierrez, a company with 51 percent and 49 percent, will be together to build the new airport at Palenque. It will have the capacity to grow, a long runway, to stimulate the tourism market, for the very interesting archaeological site, said the director of ASA, at the request of the federal government that currently administers 19 airports across the country and four more in partnership with state governments and private investors.
In fact, the current airport Palenque has many restrictions. With a short track, invaded by urban sprawl, is semiabandoned. The state government has a farm of 400 acres to expand, which exceeds the 290 identified by ASA for the building. It is also near the current airport.
The arguments of the federal and state governments to carry out this project focus on the new air terminal will be a determining factor for harnessing the tourism potential of the area airports because of Tuxtla Gutierrez and Villahermosa are far away for tourists.
According to the technical specifications of the new terminal, it can receive Boeing 767 and Airbus 330, which have the capacity to carry between 200 and 300 passengers. These would be aimed largely at European tourism.
