Michoacan

Its name comes from Michámacuan in Castilian: the place of fishermen, one of the four provinces of the Kingdom with its capital in Purepecha Tzintzuntzan, close to Lake Patzcuaro. During the colony it belonged to the Province of New Galicia. The state of Michoacan has 113 municipalities and its capital is the city of Morelia, formerly known as Valladolid. Economically highly dependent on agriculture for its crops and avocado, the most productive in the country. The state is also a major producer of chickpeas, lemon, sesame, sorghum and strawberry. As for livestock is distinguished by being a major producer of cattle and about 32 of its mining towns have significant deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, barite and copper. The orography of Michoacán is one of the most rugged of Mexico and is part of the Transversal Volcanic Axis and the Sierra Madre del Sur. Its main lakes are Lake Cuitzeo, Lake Patzcuaro, Lake Zirahuén and part of Lake Chapala.

Its most important river is the Lerma River, which rises in the State of Mexico and caters to the dam to irrigate Tepuxtec Valley Maravatio and produce hydroelectricity. Next in importance and the Balsas River Cupatitzio River, which feeds the waterfalls of La Tzaráracua.
Culturally, the state is renowned for its music, crafts and indigenous heritage, especially in the area Tzintzuntzan.
