
Its name comes from Michámacuan in Castilian: the place of fishermen, one of the four provinces of the Kingdom with its capital in Purepecha Tzintzuntzan, close to Lake Patzcuaro. During the colony it belonged to the Province of New Galicia. The state of Michoacan has 113 municipalities and its capital is the city of Morelia, formerly known as Valladolid. Economically highly dependent on agriculture for its crops and avocado, the most productive in the country. The state is also a major producer of chickpeas, lemon, sesame, sorghum and strawberry. As for livestock is distinguished by being a major producer of cattle and about 32 of its mining towns have significant deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, barite and copper.
