Playa del Carmen. The World Center of Excellence for Destinations presented an assessment of the Riviera Maya, which required a year of work to collect and process information.
The study was conducted based on an agreement between the CED and the Trust for Tourism Promotion of the Riviera Maya, for whose preparation is taken into account, besides tourism aspects, the economic, social and environmental performance of municipalities of Solidaridad and Tulum .
The chief operating officer of the CED, Cesar Castaneda said that the diagnosis indicates that in the Mayan Riviera beaches, archeology, cultural heritage, theme parks, diving and information on the destination have standards of "excellent performance".
While, he added, was considered "high performance" with regard to accommodation, food and beverage fair tourism, structure of management bodies, security, transportation, marketing and sales.
The environmental theme was categorized as "low performance", at which point the operating director of the CED clarified that this does not mean there is a particular problem, but rather that it is an area of opportunity that should the Riviera Maya make any difference.
Above all, he said, now that the global tourism trend points towards more environmentally friendly.
Among the specific proposals of the CED team made to improve the quality of the Riviera Maya destination in its different aspects, highlight ratify the archaeological value in promoting and creating an impact study of diving in the water balance.
Also, train frontline staff of the hotel with the capacity to inform tourists about the attractions of the region, encourage the theme parks to facilitate free access of Quintana Roo, reinforce the cultural image, strengthen and give visibility the contribution of the Mayan culture.
It is also proposed to create a strict state and municipal legislation for the protection of beaches, develop a green program for hotels, make an annual award for excellence in tourism and training of employees in industry in the fight against drugs and prostitution, among others.
The diagnosis document presents more than 100 specific proposals for improving the quality of the destination and the general conditions of the municipalities, its medium-term goal is to establish strict rules of sustainable development, which preserve this tourist destination and generate wealth for its inhabitants.
