Chichen Itza

Recently voted as one of the new seven wonders of the world, the ruins of Chichen Itza lie about midway between Cacun ad Merida so that the journey from each city takes around two or three hours. Chichen Itza is an ancient city which name means "in the mouth t the Itzae's. In its architecture you can observe change in style starting with the Pucc style, also shared with Uxmal and other sites in the Peninsula. Chichen Itza was a larger city with many inhabitants, you can observe ruins which had easy access to the water coming from vrious caves and cenotes of the region. The city is divided into two principal areas Old Chichen and New Chichen. Old Chichen was founded by the Maya and governed by priests, the architecture is charcterized by many representations of the God Chacc, the Maya rain God.
New Chichen began with the arrival of Itza from Cetral Mexico. The city was rebuilt by the Itza and is characterized by images of the God Kukulcan, the plumbed serpent. Aroud 1150 A.D a new wave of Itza took over the city and ruled for another 150 years until Chichen Itza was finally overtaken by the rival city of Mayapan.
